Happy Día de los Muertos!

We had 3 trick-or-treaters tonight. When they rang the doorbell these little dogs barked:

Hope your Halloween was spooktacular.

P.S. Emily Martin is the artist behind the painting, but I am the photographer behind the guard dogs.

The pen is mightier than the sword.

"You’re picking a fight with Fox News? They gave Juan Williams a $2 million contract just for you firing him. NPR, you just brought a tote bag full of David Sedaris books to a knife fight!!!"

Today I found 38 matches for a Google search of "NPR, you just brought a tote bag full of David Sedaris books to a knife fight!!!" Last night Jon Stewart made me laugh when he said that on The Daily Show, even though I've never even read a David Sedaris book. But I always pick them up and read the descriptions because the covers and titles are so unique. Anyway, this morning as I drove to work, what do I hear on NPR? Jon Stewart saying, "NPR, you just brought a tote bag full of David Sedaris books to a knife fight!!!" NPR, thank you for laughing with us.

Any David Sedaris fans? Do you have a favorite to recommend to me?

P.S. You too can own a Pirate Skeleton letter opener or my version of a book/knife fight.

Michael Kors Similes

Michael Kors didn't have as many similes this week; mostly he had colorful comments. My favorites (by designer):

I think there's nothing wrong with granola, but it has to be Fashion Show Granola.
It wasn't granola deluxe. It's too reality based.
His girl, you know, doesn't get out of bed until midnight. And your girl, I think, like, when the sun goes down she has to lock herself in the house.

It looks like these girls left, like, a crazy Polynesian party and shoved all this stuff in their head.
I just hope, honestly, that, you know, the circus doesn't come to town.

Michael's are like, I don't know, they're like stage costume cocktail wear.
He thinks that if you add beads and shine and feathers and satin, Wow! It's a show! Yeah, it's a show GIRL!

By the way, one thing holding me back from trying out for Survivor is that I have a fear that I will cry like Michael if the tribe votes me out. On t.v. In front of everyone.

P.S. My version of Fashion Show Granola is from Design Sponge.

quote of the day

Right now I'm reading The Gates by John Connolly. It's so good. The gates of hell have opened, but the story is told in a funny way. Here is my favorite footnote so far (as of chapter 23 there are 24 footnotes):

Actually, astronomers who were recently sifting through thousands of signals from Sagittarius B2, a big dust cloud at the center of our galaxy, found a substance there called ethyl formate, which is the chemical responsible for the flavor of raspberries, and the smell of rum, the drink popular with pirates. Therefore, our galaxy tastes a bit of raspberries and smells of rum, which is nice.

I looked it up and it's really true.

P.S. Shelf Life is by James Hopkins.

Rose in a Storm by Jon Katz

Over the week and a half it took me to read this short book our average high was around 92 degrees, the hottest day reaching 99 degrees. Did that contribute to my dissatisfaction with this book, the tale of a dog named Rose who tries to save farm animals during a massive snow storm? Or maybe it was the way the story was written from the border collie/shepherd mix's point of view, adding to the implausibility of it all.

Just as one example, at one point in the story Rose starts grabbing mouthfuls of hay to feed to the starving cows. I've had some dogs that have done amazing things, and I like to anthropomorphize with the best of them, but it was just too much for me to swallow.

I would probably recommend it to a young adult audience that doesn't live in the desert.

P.S. At least I'm closer to my Colorful Reading Challenge goal (7/9)!

Michael Kors Metaphors!

Episode 12 (We're in a New York State of Mind)
I'm excited and a little sad this season is coming to an end. Only 2 more episodes and 2 more chances to share the words of Michael Kors on my blog. Here are my favorites from this episode:

I think she looks kind of rock and roll secretarial.

She's a pregnant witch.
I could see a witch with a broomstick...But I don't know. I mean, to me it's a witch who's 9 months pregnant.

But I am worried that we're gonna be stuck in this super-bitch warrior mode.

P.S. The Hansel and Gretel witch is by Vojtek Kubasta. It's from a pop-up book that I wish was mine!

a scary story for October

As we were leaving today...

Student 1: I'm scared of her brother!

Student 2: Yeah, she's scared of my brother!

Me: Why is she scared of your brother?

Student 2: Because he has a tooth like a hippo!

P.S. The hippo with scary teeth picture is by Shuichi Nakano and I found it here.

scrappin

On Tuesday I got to scrapbook with my friend Angi. I had to bring the dogs because her boyfriend misses Captain Skippyjon Jones, which makes me feel good and deems him a keeper all at once. Her cats hid even though they are bigger than the dogs.

She made 6 pages, and I made 1. That's how it usually goes; she has 3 pages done and I'm still deciding between lime green or blue cardstock!

The page I made is from our trip to the Chautauqua Book Store a few years ago. Makes me miss Amy & Tito:

P.S. Cut, glue, make memories! is by Elsie Flannigan.

a first

Yesterday I found out one of my co-workers does not know how to ride a bike! I have never met a grown-up before who couldn't ride a bike and I just can't get over it. There are 2 kids bikes in the library donated for the 2 kids who read the most. He got on one of them and was trying to ride it. Everyone started shouting directions at him and he was convinced/scared he would just fall over.

Yes we were shouting in the library! Once the bell rings teachers turn into animals!

P.S. Bike Pride is by Ricardo Cavolo.

Michael Kors Similes

Episode 11 (A Look in the Line)
Michael Kors said a designer's work this week was, "Like a bowl of sawdust." Imagine wearing those clothes on a windy day!

He also used a simile on the designer I hoped would go home, Gretchen!
"These particular bike shorts look like her thighs were eating them! I mean they were crazy!"

And finally, a metaphor this week which inspired the selection of the sad-faced pirate girl picture above...

"This is not a smiley face dress. This is a sad face."

Who's your favorite designer? I'm rooting for Mondo and April.

P.S. Broken Dawn is by Art&Ghosts.

10.10.10 is the sign of the...

Red Dragon?

This book is the prequel to The Silence of the Lambs, but alas, it is not the story of Hannibal Lecter as I thought it would be. However, he does have a small role in the story. Mostly it's about the detective who captured Dr. Lecter, and his plight as he tries to figure out who the Red Dragon is and how he chooses the families he's going to slay.

If you like a gruesome mystery, I highly recommend it. Happy 10.10.10!

P.S. Another one done for my Colorful Reading Challenge (6/9)!

Michael Kors Similes

The correct answer to what I read for Banned Books Week is To Kill a Mockingbird, and it was just as awesome as the first time I read it!!!

On to Michael Kors similes from episode 10 (There's a Pattern Here). He was obsessed with boobs this week which is usually Heidi's job:

I think that she looks a little like Fried Egg on the Boob.

It looks like she has kind of sleepy eyes on her boobs.

...looked like a bad ice skating costume...
(Have we heard that one already? Must be a real insult!)

She's Annie Hall going to the country club.

P.S. Ode to To Kill a Mockingbird is by elloh.

Let's play a game!

There's this blog I like to read called Polaroid Cupcake and she always makes a mosaic and has people guess what movie she's thinking of. I wanted to do the same thing with books and I hope she's flattered.

So...what book did I read for Banned Books Week? I finished it today.

October Reading

Once again October for me means reading scary, magical, or fantasy books! Here's what I'm going to try to read this month:

The Gates by John Connolly - I LOVED The Book of Lost Things! I can't wait to read his latest which sounds really scary.
The Girl with No Shadow by Joanne Harris - It's the sequel to Chocolat and it begins on Halloween.
Red Dragon by Thomas Harris - This one's the prequel to Silence of the Lambs. That book gave me bad dreams.

And it doesn't fit into my scheme exactly but I won this book as an Early Reviewer:

Rose in a Storm
by Jon Katz - told from a dog's point of view

What are you reading this month?

I am hardcore.

The Glee Challenge at Dixie Pieces last week was to pay homage to alternative music of the 90s and use a title from a Train song. I chose I Am, but my favorite alternative music to listen to in the 90s was made by Smashing Pumpkins. They rocked.

I dug out pictures from late 1996/early 1997 B.C. (Before Corey) with my most 90s outfit. What a shame -- when I weighed 115 pounds I was obsessed with baggy clothes! I love those knock off Docs though. So I am rocking 90s fashion hardcore here. And being an Arizonan I am hardcore into Grand Canyon.

I looked up hardcore on Wikipedia and that term actually comes from Punk music.
